In the Field

Here are some pictures from our field work over the years! This includes some photos taken from others at the ISWS who are no longer with the Survey from decades past. Enjoy!

CH4DS researcher measures groundwater levels in a groundwater well, located near a school.
Measuring wells in the field.
A telemetry box and solar panel, with our research truck in the background. This well monitoring system is marked as a WARM (Water and Atmospheric Resources Monitoring) network well.
Solar panels keep the telemetry stations and groundwater monitoring happening year round.
Iron encrustation in a well casing, with a pencil for scale. The well diameter is similar to pencil length, and the iron buildup creates a ring approximately 1-inch wide inside the well casing.

Iron encrustation inside of a wellbore. A hand is shown for scale, and the encrustation nearly closes the diameter of the pipe that is slightly larger than the hand pictured.
Iron buildup inside of a well that impedes the well’s ability to transmit water.
A telemetry monitoring setup with the box lid open. A solar panel hangs off the back of the protective casing, while inside resides a control box of electrical equipment. ISWS field vehicles are in the background.
A telemetry station that monitors and records groundwater level data every 15 minutes.
Two CH4DS researchers measuring groundwater levels at wells located near a parking lot at a State Park.
Measuring and inspecting groundwater wells in the field.
Large groundwater pumps are encircled by a yellow curb indoors. One person sits on the curb in an old-school diver's uniform, while a crouched worker gives instructions nearby.
Divers descend into the caisson to measure water flow in the wells’ laterals and inspect conditions.
A CH4DS researcher uses a hand auger to install a soil moisture probe in the field. Grass near the probe is dried and yellow. Agricultural fields in the background have been harvested and tilled, while windmills spin in the skyline.
Installation of a soil moisture probe to analyze hydrodynamics in an agricultural setting.
Dark gray/black water being ejected from a pump during well treatments. The water color is likely due to high iron content.
Dewatering well treatments to improve well capacity and efficiency.
